Pétanque Overview

A petanque-like game was traced back to the 52nd century BC when two balls and a jack were found in a sarcophagus of an Egyptian prince. Various forms of the game have dotted history since then with evidence of the game being played most famously by Sir Francis Drake on the Hoe at Plymouth. However in 1910 a new version of the game was developed in La Coitat, France from which the modern game is derived.

The sport’s international federation was formed in 1958 but fell dormant in 1966 (after 5 successful World Championships). New life was breathed into the FIPJP in 1971 by the National Federation of France and Pétanque now appears on the World Games programme under Boules Sports.
