Paralympic Football 5-a-side Overview
Paralympic Football is an adaptation of Association Football for athletes with disabilities. One of the most prominent forms of the game is Football 5-a-side for athletes who are visually impaired. European Football 5-a-side originated in Spain but records show tournament were held in 1980 in Brazil; where it is thought the sport was created.
In 1997 the first European and American championships which were held shortly followed by the first World Championships in 1998. The sport made its first Paralympic appearance at the 2004 Games in Athens.
Football 5-a-side is played with modified FIFA rules where the field of play is smaller and is surrounded by boards. Teams are reduced to 5 players. A off-field guide may be used to direct the players and the ball is equipped with a noise-making device which allows it to be located. The length of the match is 50-minutes with a 10-minute break for half time.
Players are assigned to one of three sport classes based upon their level of visual impairment. These classes are B1, B2, B3:-
- B1– Totally, or almost totally blind; from no light perception up to light perception but inability to recognise the shape of a hand.
- B2 - Partially sighted; able to recognise the shape of a hand up to a visual acuity of 2/60 or a visual field of less than 5 degrees.
- B3 - Partially sighted; visual acuity from 2/60 to 6/60 or visual field from 5 to 20 degrees.
