Karting Overview

Karting as its own sport was created by Art Ingelis of California in 1956. In 1962 the Commision Intenationale de Karting (CIK) was created as an international governing body for the discipline; thenin 2000 amalgamated with the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) to become CIK-FIA. As a sport, Karting has grown rapidly and is very popular in Europe. It has been used as a learning tool to introduce young drivers into racing and is considered to be the first step in any racers career. All the current and many former F1 drivers developed their skills through the karting system. Good examples of this are Michael Schumacher, Ayrton Senna, Fernando Alonso and Great Britain's Lewis Hamilton.
