Ju-Jitsu Overview

Ju-Jitsu dates back to the 16th century. It is said to have been developed when Shirobei Akiyama saw how supple Willow branches survived the winter snow showers by bending allowing the accumulated snow to fall to the ground. The sport is described as the mother of the martial arts and encompasses techniques from Karate, Aikido, Judo and Kobudo. The major difference is that this is a sport focussed on self-defence. The idea is to immobilise and disarm your opponent but not to harm them. In 1869, the return of the Emperors to Japan saw the Samurai lose there privileged status and feudalism was banned. However the traditions of the Samurai continued and travellers spread Ju-Jitsu around the globe.

The JJIF organizes World and Continental Championships and has been a member of the International World Games Association since 1994.
