Gymnastics Overview

Whilst is has been an activity sport for over 2000 years competitive gymnastics began as recently as 120 years ago. Up until 1930 the World Gymnastics Championships included some elements of what we now know as track and field athletics. Although an Olympics sport since 1896, gymnastics as we know it today began at the 1924 Olympics in France. The modern sport includes 3 disciplines, artistic, rhythmic and trampoline.

Artistic gymnastics appeared at the first games in 1896 and is probably the most well known of the disciplines including balance beam, floor exercises, horizontal bar, parallel bar, pommel horse, rings, uneven bars and vault. Men and women compete both individually and in teams.

Rhythmic gymnastics is for women only and is performed to music on a 13m square floor area with the competitors using rope, a hoop, a ball, clubs and ribbon in a choreographed routine.

Trampoline gymnastics debuted at the Sydney Olympics in 2000. Both men and women compete in individual events.
