Football Overview
The modern game of Football was created in 1863, however its roots can be traced back as early as the 9th century to the game of Shrovetide football. Association Football came about due to a requirement of standardised rules. Many schools and clubs would play football with there own rules. This ment that matches between each other involved arguments and disputes. On 26th October 1863, 11 clubs sent their representatives to the Freemason’s Tavern in London and it was here that the Football Association was born. From this meeting the first set of Association rules were created and in 1904 FIFA, the international governing body of the sport, was formed.
The first ever football competition was the FA cup which was held in 1871 with the first World Cup taking place in 1930. England won the World Cup for their first and only time in 1966. The sport has also featured prominently in the Olympic program with the exception of 1896 and 1932. Women's football had its first World Cup in 1991 and is now held every 4 years.
