Fencing Overview

Fencing can be traced back to 1190BC in Egypt and was used for dueling and warfare. Swordsmanship became virtually obsolete during the Middle Ages. However the advent of firearms in the 15th Century made armour obsolete and brought use of the sword back into prominence. Over the years the discipline was refined from crude hacking movements to fast blade and footwork actions.

The modern sport of fencing includes 3 weapons, namely, foil, epee and sabre where athletes compete as individuals and in teams. An Olympic sport since 1896, fencing is one of the few sports to appear at every modern Olympics. Wheelchair Fencing has had full Paralympics status since the first Games in Rome in 1960. Twenty four countries competed at the 2006 Paralympics.
