Disability Fencing Overview

Wheelchair Fencing became and Paralympic sport at the 1960 Games in Rome. There are individual and team foil and epee events for men and women. Only men compete in the sabre events. Scoring and competition format are identical to the Olympic discipline where athletes are connected to electronic scoring apparatus.

Athletes compete in three classes; A is for athletes with good recovery and balance and full trunk movement; B is for those with poor balance and recovery but with the use of at least one upper limb; and C is for athletes with a severe physical impairment in all four limbs.
