Cycling Overview

Bicycles today evolved from the “hobby-horse” which was invented as a walking aid by Baron von Drais. With two wheels attached to a frame the rider would propel themselves along by pushing their feet against the ground. However Scott Kirkpatrick McMillan devised a pedal-and-crank mechanism to power these two-wheeled machines in 1839 and bicycle racing was born.

Road Racing appeared at the first modern Olympics in 1896. However women’s cycling didn’t appear on the programme until 1984 at the Los Angeles Games. There are now 3 disciplines in Olympic cycling; Road (time trials and road race for men and women), Track (time trial, individual pursuit, points race and sprints for men and women plus Keirin, Madison and team pursuit just for men); and finally, Mountain (cross country for men and women).
